“I think if you have two really great wrestlers in a match, but the referee isn’t really that good, then the match will suffer because of it. But if you have two wrestlers who are pretty new, and they may just be learning the ropes, but you have a really good referee, it can really help the match,” said Sharpe, the senior referee in Awesome Wrestling Entertainment, who worked several matches on the AWE Night of Legends pay-per-view, including briefly the main event featuring Kevin Nash, Diamond Dallas Page and The Rock-n-Roll Express.

The pay-per-view was a homecoming of sorts for the Mechanicsville native, who cites another pair of Mechanicsville natives, Dave and Earl Hebner, as childhood influences who helped him decide on a career in professional wrestling.

Coming back to Virginia, for his first pay-per-view, “was one of the coolest, one of the biggest things I’ve done,” said Sharpe. “To be in the ring with DDP, Kevin Nash, people that my family has actually heard of, and they get to come, get to buy a ticket, get to come watch, it was awesome.”

It wasn’t always refereeing that was on Sharpe’s career radar. He trained and worked in-ring as a wrestler before deciding three years ago to focus on becoming a full-time ref.

“If I really want to make it to WWE or TNA, I’m not a very big guy. I just didn’t see it as very realistic that I would make it very easily” as a wrestler, Sharpe said.

That said, his training and work as a wrestler is a big help to Sharpe as a referee.

“Me being able to understand a little bit more than some other referees might about wrestling, I think that helps me a lot. It makes me more valuable to the companies. Hopefully it will make me more valuable and a better commodity,” Sharpe said.

An important part of the job is keeping one’s ego in check. “People aren’t there to see the referee, unless it’s friends and family,” Sharpe said.

“I understand that it’s all about the wrestlers. I just enjoy my role of being able to be in there and be a part of the act and kind of help them help as much as I can with whatever I can do and whatever they need.”

“It feels great to hear everyone praising our match.  I know that this was really a chance for us to shine, and I know I really stepped it up in there, and by the tough fight that I was given, it’s obvious that Jamin also brought his best,” Dutt said. “Truth be told, it’s my goal to always have the match of the night no matter what card I’m on.  It’s just that competitive spirit in me, and what better avenue to showcase that but on pay-per-view.”

Dutt has a history of shining on big cards, including several TNA pay-per-views. He has his sights set on being the first AWE cruiserweight champion as the company sets its sights on a busy 2012.

“I think the potential for AWE to succeed is there. It’s just a matter of capitalizing on the momentum that we have created,” Dutt said. “For a promotion with no TV show and no national outlet to breakthrough with pay-per-view and draw sellout crowds every night is hugely impressive. It’s obvious that we are doing something right, numbers don’t lie. We have a huge chance to showcase pro wrestling back in the wrestling marketplace, not many people focus on that word. That’s our key. We want to give wrestling fans what they have been longing for – wrestling!”

And the kind of wrestling that Dutt brings night in and night out is what AWE will be known for. In addition to a strong ground game, Dutt is one of the best high-flyers in the business, as was evidenced in what may have been the move of the night in the match of the night at Night of the Legends – an off-the-top-tope, out-of-the-ring dive that caught Olivencia flush on the arena floor.

“It’s risk and reward,” Dutt said of the aerial game. “I know that I’m taking a massive risk, but I also know that the reward is going to be great. It’s those type of out-of-the-box moves that can really take an opponent off his game, and that’s what happened with Jamin.  Also, I know that the fans love it with I take to the air!”

Just as sure as he is that a world heavyweight title is in his near-future.

“It’s my destiny,” said Silva, who defeated the former United States champion Finlay in a brutal 25-minute match that left Finlay with a wrecked knee and Silva with a broken nose.

The match – and Silva’s impressive showing in it – earned the 21-year-old the praise of broadcast commentators Larry Zbyszko and “Dirty” Dutch Mantell, who early in the pay-per-view doubted the hype for Silva as the “future of professional wrestling,” but by the end of the show had come around.

Silva admits to being motivated by his critics – “the haters,” he calls them.

“If you hate me, keep hating. I like proving people wrong, but if you appreciate me, I’ll appreciate back. I love my fans. Hell, I love my haters,” Silva said.

A run at the AWE World Title is in Silva’s plans for 2012.

“AWE would have way more potential if the banner would officialy change to Alex Silva Wrestling Entertainment,” Silva said.

Calling the Hall of Famer a “Neanderthal” and “barbarian,” Akbar still dominated long stretches of their match at the AWE Night of Legends pay-per-view before the veteran rallied to score what many viewed as an upset victory.

Akbar, for his part, shrugged off the defeat in his pay-per-view debut. For Akbar, the match with Duggan was a linchpin in his effort to educate American wrestling fans with his message – that the U.S. is, counter to its ideals, viewed by many the world over as militantly aggressive and racially biased.

“What rubs the rest of the world the wrong way is the arrogance with which you Americans go about your business, which happens to screw over everybody else in the world,” Akbar said.

Duggan is “a perfect example of that,” Akbar said.

“If it takes me putting on a pair of tights and beating up ‘Hacksaw’ Jim Duggan, hey, wake up, pay attention, this just might be a receipt for how you treat everybody else,” Akbar said.

“AWE is my platform, and that pay-per-view was a perfect platform for me to go out and spread my message, which is exactly what I did,” said Akbar, who also feels he proved to AWE fans that “their hero, ‘Hacksaw’ Jim Duggan, has to resort to unsavory tactics in order to hold this young lion down.”

“Since the pay-per-view, people have been calling me the Lion of Zion,” Akbar said. “You can’t believe everything you read on the Internet, but you can believe that Mohammad Akbar is jacked, he’s tan, and he got exactly what he wanted to get out at AWE Night of the Legends.”

Next in Akbar’s sights: a shot at the AWE World Heavyweight Title.

“Titles provide a higher level of a platform on the AWE stage. So of course Mohammad Akbar has the aspiration of becoming the AWE heavyweight champion. If you’re the top guy, then you get the time to speak your mind,” Akbar said.

“Match of the night? Absolutely. Whenever I’m involved in anything, it’s going to be match of the night,” said Olivencia, who scored another controversial pinfall victory over Dutt at the pay-per-view, flooring Dutt with his O Drop finisher  after disabling “The Original Playa from the Himalaya” with a low blow.

Controversy or not, Olivencia declared in an interview with the Voice of AWE, Chris Graham, that he’s done with Dutt and ready to move on to bigger and better things. Among those bigger and better things – a role in an off-Broadway production that could be his big break in the acting world.

“Now you can expect to see Jamin Olivencia not only in professional wrestling, but also acting. Why not, right? It’s something I’m good at,” said Olivencia, who of course still has big plans with his day job. His Night of Legends performance has had fans buzzing about what might be next up for Olivencia.

He’s been working his way up the ladder in Ohio Valley Wrestling, where he appears regularly on TV. Night of Legends was actually Olivencia’s pay-per-view debut. That he took the opportunity given him and seized it is something he will always remember.

“It’s electric, it’s energy, it’s everything that we as performers strive for. When we got into this business, we got in with the hopes of being the best that we could be, and drawing that type of energy toward you, gravitating toward you. What Sonjay and I were able to do, that’s what makes it so special. That’s what makes us so addicted to the type of business that we’re in, just that energy,” Olivencia said.

Even before he hit the mat with the force of a car accident, though, Morton knew that he was going to “get up, no matter what.” And if you ask Morton, Nash knew that, too.

“Maybe he could have knocked me completely out, but he didn’t. He realized what he was going to have to do to beat me, so he just went the other way with it,” said Morton, who was declared the winner after Nash left the ring following the powerbomb and was counted out by special referee Ronnie Garvin.

Nash, who left AWE for WWE following the Night of Legends pay-per-view, hasn’t commented publicly on the Morton match. Some observers have speculated that Nash left in frustration after delivering several finishers to Morton and not getting a 1-2-3.

Morton sidestepped a question on that in an interview with AWE’s Chris Graham.

“It come to a point because I was saying that no matter what it took, he wasn’t going to beat me. I wasn’t going to give up. I wasn’t going to let them count me out. Because I was ready for that night,” Morton said.

“If you watch the match, look at Kevin Nash’s eyes. He’s a man. We didn’t sit down and go over no finish. We didn’t sit there and do things. We went to the ring,” Morton said.

Asked if he was satisfied with how the match turned out, Morton said “being satisfied wasn’t the point of the thing.”

“The point of the thing was to let him know that I was man enough to step in the ring with him,” Morton said.

“I was satisfied that the match turned out the way it did. Basically because I didn’t get killed. Kevin Nash is a seven-foot monster. I’m not trying to insult anybody’s intelligence. A lot of that match was stiff, it was hard. He laid in, I laid in. I threw the first punch, but I had to. I had to let him know that I was for real. He answered in a way that let me know that he was for real back. The outcome of the match was that he got counted out because he knew that I wasn’t going to give up. It wasn’t going to be that way. I wasn’t going to put him over, and he wasn’t going to put me over,” Morton said.

The ultimate satisfaction for Morton was the sense of mutual respect that he and Nash both left Night of Legends with for the other.

“He respected me, and I respected him. He could have knocked 10 of my teeth out. Understand me? But for him to beat me, he was going to have to do that. He hit me with everything he had, and I took it like a man. Put it this way – I took a butt-whupping like a man,” Morton said.

AWE is working toward securing a weekly TV deal with the goal of launching a TV series in 2012, Garrison said.

Garrison had first confirmed the news in an interview with The News Virginian, a Waynesboro, Va., daily newspaper that embedded a reporter backstage at the Night of Legends pay-per-view to see firsthand how a wrestling show is put on behind the scenes.

After the event, Garrison told The News Virginian company executives are in negotiations regarding a possible TV deal.

Garrison told AwesomeWrestlingEntertainment.com today that those negotiations are still ongoing.

The generally good reviews of the Night of Legends pay-per-view from fans have only been helpful to AWE in that regard, Garrison said.

AWE’s Rob Feinstein and Bill Apter interviewed fans at the Oct. 15 AWE Night of Legends pay-per-view. It would be more accurate to say that Feinstein and Apter talked to fans before, during and after the big show.

And what did they find out? That some fans drove several hours to get to Augusta Expo, for one thing. That quite a few were there to see “Kevin Nash get his butt whupped,” as one fan put it.

Others were happy to see Nash put it to Ricky Morton of The Rock-n-Roll Express before suffering a surprise countout loss to the tag-team veteran.

We’d call them rave reviews – but judge that for yourself.
